Myths about hypnosis

Hypnosis is not:

  • For entertainment.
  • A mind-control technique.
  • An instrument of manipulation.
  • A tool to overpower the person.
  • A mean to force someone do do things they don't want/wish to do.
  • A way to induce someone to a deep sleep and lose awareness.
  • A technique to make someone forget what happened during hypnosis.
  • A mechanism to be used by the hypnotherapist without the person's consent.

how to prepare for a session

Special preparation is not required:

  • Wear comfortable clothes.
  • Make sure you're well rested.
  • Be open and let go of any expectations, particularly if they are based on what you've seen in movies or entertainment shows.

What happens during the session

What to expect:

  • The session can take place while seated or lying down and lasts about 60 minutes.
  • There's an initial conversation to discuss the process of hypnosis and to set and/or review treatment goals.
  • Then you're induced into a comfortable state of relaxation where is easy to communicate with your subconscious mind.
  • Through different techniques, the hypnotherapist suggests ways for you to achieve your goals. For example, reduce cravings for smoke.
  • At the end of the session, the hypnotherapist helps you to slowly and gradually come back to a state of full alertness.
  •  Hypnosis can be effective in helping people cope with pain, stress and anxiety and its effectiveness increases when is part of a larger treatment plan, for example, for quitting smoking or losing weight. 
  • Anyone can be hypnotized and anyone can block hypnosis. For that reason, hypnosis is not for everyone.  In general, the more quickly and easily people reach a state of relaxation and calm during a session, the more likely it is that they will benefit from hypnosis

Hypnosis is a changed state of awareness and increased relaxation that allows for improved focus and concentration. It also is called hypnotherapy. During hypnosis, most people feel calm and relaxed. Hypnosis typically makes people more open to suggestions about behaviour changes. 


Although you're more open to suggestion during hypnosis, you don't lose control over your behaviour during a hypnosis session. 


No, because you don’t lose control over your behaviour. 


Hypnosis done by a trained health care provider is a safe, complementary and alternative medical treatment. However, hypnosis may not be safe for some people with severe mental illness. The use of hypnosis is generally not advisable for patients with borderline personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, or psychosis. 


Getting stuck in trance simply is not possible. 


Hypnosis can help you gain control over behaviours you'd like to change (bed wetting, smoking, overeating, etc). It may help you cope better with anxiety or pain. For people with cancer, it can be used to ease side effects from chemo and radiation treatment. 


Some people are more susceptible than others but everybody can get hypnotized as long as they have the will for that to happen. If you resist it, either consciously or unconsciously, it may not happen. 


Your brain slips into the Theta brainwaves. When you’re in that state, you remain awake but in a deep state of relaxation and your focus is fixed in a way that make you seem zoned out or in a trance. When you go to sleep, you reach this state after you relaxed but before you enter the deep sleep stage.
